"The Earth’s magnetic field is still decreasing at a fast rate particularly over the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly region. This can be clearly seen in the attached image which I created from satellite magnetic field measurements, showing that in this region the magnetic field strength has decreased by approximately 10% since 1980. This is alarmingly fast in comparison with an average global weakening of 10% over a period of 100 years.
In addition to this fast decrease in the overall strength of the magnetic field, we are also currently observing the appearance of geomagnetic jerks, particularly over southern Africa which is very close to the South Atlantic Anomaly. This is in essence a rapid variation in the time-variation pattern of various components of the Earth’s magnetic field. It is suspected that these jerks are a result of a rapid variation in the flow pattern of the molten liquid core some 3000 km below the surface of the Earth".
